Francesco Siacci (born April 20, 1839 in Rome , † May 31, 1907 in Naples ) was an Italian mathematician , ballistics scientist and officer.

Francesco Siacci

Siacci studied in Rome and after graduating in 1860 went to Turin, where he became an officer and professor of mechanics at the military academy. He also briefly took part in campaigns against Austria and Prussia in 1866, but was quickly sent back to the Academy. There he became professor of ballistics in 1872 (which he remained until 1892, most recently as major general ) and at the same time from 1875 professor of mechanics at the University of Turin . After two legislative terms as a member of the Camera dei Deputati , he was appointed senator in Rome in 1892 and was transferred to the University of Naples . In Turin he kept an honorary professorship, his successor in teaching there was Vito Volterra .

Siacci was known in the 19th century for his textbook on ballistics, which appeared from 1870 to 1884 and in the second edition in 1888 and was translated into French in 1891. He is still known today for various methods in external ballistics. In addition, he dealt with theoretical mechanics (motion of rigid bodies , canonical transformations , contact transformations , inverse problems) and mathematical studies, including the theory of conic sections , the Riccati differential equation , determinants , binary quadratic forms .

From 1872 he was a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei , in 1890 he became a full member. He was also a member of the Accademia delle Scienze in Turin and the Accademia dei Quaranta , the national science academy, as well as the academies in Naples and Bologna and the Lombard academy for science and literature.
