Francis Bebey

Francis Bebey (born July 15, 1929 in Douala , Cameroon ; † May 28, 2001 in Paris ) was a Cameroonian- French musician and writer.

Life

Bebey spent his childhood in Cameroon , Central Africa , but later came to France with his family . Bebey presents his entire artistic output in English, French or Duala . For his novel Le Fils d'Agatha Moudio , written in 1967 , he was awarded the “ Grand Prix littéraire de l'Afrique noire ”, an important African literary prize , in 1968 . The German translation appeared in 1969 under the title The Son of Agatha Moudio . For the novel Das Regenkind he received the Saint-Exupéry Prize.

In his musical compositions he brought together African sounds created by lamellophones and the single-tone flute hindewhu with Western instruments such as electric bass and percussion.

With him and the guitarist John Williams and other musicians, the album The Magic Box was created in 2001 with folk African rhythms and musical styles.

Francis Bebey died on May 29, 2001 in Paris at the age of 72. His son Patrick Bebey, born in 1964, composes and plays the piano, lamellophone and hindewhu .
