Life

After completing his baccalaureate in 1972, Bonahon studied mathematics at the École normal supérieure . In 1975 he received his diploma (Maitrise) in mathematics from the University of Paris VII . He received his doctorate in 1979 under Laurence Siebenmann at the University of Paris XI in Orsay (Thèse de Troisième Cycle: Involutions et fibers de Seifert dans les variétés de dimension 3 ). As a post-doctoral student , he was a Procter Fellow at Princeton University in 1979/80 . In 1980 he became Attaché des Recherches and in 1983 Chargé des Recherches of the CNRS . In 1985 he completed his habilitation with Siebenmann at the University of Paris XI ( Geometric structures on 3-manifolds and applications ). In 1986 he became Assistant Professor and in 1989 Professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles .

In 1990 he was visiting professor at the University of California, Davis , in 1996 at the Center Émile Borel and IHES , in 1997 at Caltech and in 2000 at IHES.

Bonahon deals with three-dimensional topology , knot theory, surface diffeomorphisms, hyperbolic geometry and Klein groups .

In 1985 he received the bronze medal of the CNRS and from 1989 to 1994 a Presidential Young Investigator Award. From 1987 to 1989 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He was invited speaker at the 1990 International Mathematicians Congress in Kyoto ( Ensembles limites et applications ).

Frédéric Paulin is one of his PhD students .
