Francis Virgile Chaperon (born November 27, 1926 in Thun ; † February 26, 2016 ) was a Swiss surveyor and university lecturer .

life and work

Chaperon father was from Saint-Gingolph VS . In Thun and later in Bern , Chaperon attended grammar school where, as an enthusiastic mathematician, he attended the mathematics lectures at the University of Bern with Hugo Hadwiger . After graduating from high school, Chaperon studied mathematics at the University of Basel , followed by an internship in actuarial mathematics .

The lack of reference to practical work in nature led Chaperon to study as a surveying engineer at the ETH Zurich . As a working student in Basel, Bern and Zurich, he had to finance his studies himself. Chaperon graduated from this in 1954 with a diploma as a surveying engineer.

After a practice to acquire the federal patent for engineering geometer, interrupted by substitution as a mathematics teacher at various schools, Chaperon became research assistant to Fritz Kobold (1905–1985) at the Institute for Geodesy and Photogrammetry at the ETH Zurich. As an enthusiastic supporter of the Swiss militia army, Chaperon dealt with "artillery surveying" and the "army weather service", which he temporarily headed as deputy chief.

In 1959, Chaperon was chosen as the main teacher for surveying and mathematics at the Central Switzerland Technical Center in Lucerne, today Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. In cooperation with the Institute for Applied Mathematics at ETH Zurich, Chaperon worked on a research contract from the Swiss National Science Foundation in 1969/1970 on "Flexible methods for balancing gravity networks".

Chaperon was elected to the ETH Zurich as a full professor for surveying for the winter semester 1972/1973 and as such supervised the basic training in surveying for the cultural and surveying engineers, this from the first semesters to the final diploma. The basic subjects of mathematics, geometry and physics and the cross-connections between measurement and all related fields of knowledge and other applications were of particular importance to Chaperon. The summer surveying courses held by Chaperon in the Valais Alps are considered the «Chaperon surveying era».

On March 31, 1992, Chaperon was officially adopted by ETH Zurich. For decades, Chaperon was involved as an expert in the Federal Examination Commission for Engineering Geometers and in the Swiss Geodetic Commission.

Chaperon found his final resting place in the Hönggerberg cemetery .
