Francis Matthey

Francis Matthey (born July 17, 1942 ) is a Swiss politician of the Social Democratic Party .

He became known through the rejection of his election to the Federal Council on March 3, 1993 . Matthey had been elected in place of Christiane Brunner, who had been nominated by his party . In order to follow the resolution of his party to enlist a woman in the Federal Council, he declined to accept the office after a period of reflection. Ruth Dreifuss finally became Federal Councilor and thus René Felber's successor .

From 1980 to 1988 Matthey was mayor of La Chaux-de-Fonds , from 1987 to 1995 a member of the National Council and from 1988 to 2001 a member of the State Council of the Canton of Neuchâtel .

Until 2011 Matthey was President of the Federal Commission on Migration Issues.
