The Francis Scott Key Bridge , also known as the Outer Harbor Bridge or simply Key Bridge , is a four-lane road bridge in Baltimore , Maryland , USA , which crosses the Patapsco River on the Interstate 695 ( Baltimore Beltway ) in the southeast of the city.
It is named after Francis Scott Key , who watched the Battle of Baltimore and the Royal Navy bombardment of Fort McHenry from a nearby position on the night of September 14, 1814 , which inspired him to write the poem The Defense of Fort McHenry , which later formed the text of the American national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner .
The bridge structure, including the ramp bridges, is around 2770 m long. The truss bridge is 806 m (2644 ft ) long, of which 366 m (1200 ft) are accounted for by the main opening and 220 m (722 ft) for each side opening. It has a clearance height of 56.4 m (185 ft ) above MHW .
From a technical point of view, the main bridge is a continuous girder extending over three fields , in which elements of an arch bridge such as the suspended roadway are integrated (continuous truss arch bridge). After the Ikitsuki Bridge and the Astoria Bridge , it currently has the third longest span of all steel truss continuous girders worldwide .
The pillars of the main opening are protected by ship deflectors in the form of large, round floating bodies, which are anchored at a distance of around 100 m in front of the pillars.
Use of the bridge is subject to a toll , and it participates in the E-ZPass system.
