Francis Thomas Bacon

Francis Thomas Bacon (born December 21, 1904 in Billericay , † May 24, 1992 in Little Shelford ) was an English engineer.

From 1925 to 1940, Bacon worked for CA Parsons & Co. Ltd. in Newcastle upon Tyne. He then worked at King's College, Cambridge , working on the development of alkaline fuel cells . In 1959 he introduced the first 6 kW fuel cell based on the principle of the alkaline fuel cell. Fuel cells based on this were later used in space travel as part of the Apollo program .

Bacon received the Order of the British Empire and was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 1991 he received the first Grove Medal from Elsevier Verlag.
