Francis Van Bossuit (* 1635 in Brussels , then Spanish Netherlands ; † September 22, 1692 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ) was a Flemish sculptor who became known for his work in ivory , terracotta and wood.

Life

Van Bossuit worked as an apprentice in his hometown and obtained the master's degree in Antwerp before moving to Italy between 1655 and 1560 . In Florence there was a collaboration with Balthasar Permoser at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno . Another stop was Modena , where two of his earliest ivory reliefs are located. In Rome he became a member of the Bentvueghels group with the pseudonym Waarnemer , the observer.

In 1685 Van Bossuit went to Amsterdam with the painter Bonaventura van Overbeke , where he received an ivory medallion with the portrait of Wilhelm III the following year . which is now owned by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Van Bossuit died in Amsterdam in 1692.

Van Bossuit's surviving works include a number of small reliefs, most of which deal with mythological and religious subjects. From his statues, a 44 cm high ivory figure of Mars is known, which is in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. The counterpart, a statue of Venus, was lost.

In the decades that followed, many of Van Bossuit's design drawings were distributed as prints and used as models by other artists, such as Jan van Mieris and Willem van Mieris .
