Francisco Augusto Metrass (* 7. February 1825 in Lisbon ; † 14. February 1861 in Madeira ) was a Portuguese painter of romanticism .

Metrass was born into a wealthy family who was supposed to work in the import trade one day. At the Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon he received from 1836 as a student together with Tomás da Anunciação , Cristino and Manuel Maria Bordalo Pinheiro .

His first training in painting from masters such as Joaquim Rafael and António Manuel da Fonseca . From 1844 Metrass studied in Rome , together with German painters from the group of the Nazarenes , such as Friedrich Overbeck and Peter von Cornelius , and also the Portuguese Francisco Pereira Meneses .

Back in Portugal, he stopped painting portraits and instead devoted himself to painting historical events. But since his work was not valued, he had to auction all of his pictures and went to France . In 1853 he returned to Portugal after refining his technique by studying works by artists such as Rubens , Rembrandt van Rijn and Anthonis van Dyck . His work now received great public attention and King Ferdinand II bought the picture Camões eo Jau from him.

In 1854 Metrass became professor of historical painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, but only a few years later he died of tuberculosis . A street in Lisbon is named after him.
