Francisco Latzina

Francisco Latzina , also Franz Latzina, (born April 2, 1845 Brno , Moravia , † October 7, 1923 in Buenos Aires ) was an Austrian- Argentine mathematician and statistician.

Latzina attended the Fiume Naval Academy , became a naval officer and was seriously wounded in the Danish War of 1864. He turned to the study of mathematics and astronomy. He was temporarily back in service in the Austrian Navy , but retired in 1871 for health reasons after he had traveled to America again. He emigrated to Argentina and taught at the Colegio Nacional in Catamarca from 1871 to 1873 , was at the observatory in Córdoba from 1873 to 1875 and at the mining school in Catamarca from 1875/76. In 1876 he became professor of mathematics at the University of Cordoba and in 1892 at the Colegio Nacional in Buenos Aires. From 1910 he was also professor of commercial geography at the higher commercial school in Buenos Aires. In 1916 he retired.

In addition, from 1881 he was director general of the national statistical office and published its yearbooks. He published a lot in magazines on mathematics, astronomy, statistics, economics, and geography.
