Francisco Marques de Sousa Viterbo (born December 29, 1845 in Porto , † December 29, 1910 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese poet, archaeologist, historiographer and journalist.

Life

Sousa Viterbo was born in the Freguesia São Nicolau as the son of the trader Henrique de Sousa and Maria Marques da Nova. His parents planned for him to be trained at the Episcopal Seminary in Porto. He then studied medicine at the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica do Porto and finished his studies at the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica de Lisboa . He soon gave up this subject and from then on devoted himself to history and archeology. Thanks to his work, it was possible to recover important data from the biographies of people in Portuguese history, including Damião de Góis and Gil Vicente . He introduced the concept of industrial archeology in his work on milling in Portugal .

He worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper Diário de Notícias for almost 30 years. He was also the founder of the Associação de Jornalistas e Escritores Portugueses .
