Mojica acquired in 1986 at the University of Valencia a degree ( Lic. ) In biology with focus on biochemistry and a doctorate in 1993 at the University of Alicante, where parts of the work at the University of Paris-Sud emerged. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah and the University of Oxford before becoming a professor of microbiology at Alicante University in 1997.

Mojica works in the field of molecular microbiology. Current research deals with DNA- binding proteins , the regulation of gene expression , the organization of the genome in prokaryotes and the biological role of repetitive DNA sequences.

Mojica received the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in 2016 . The Fundación Lilly awarded him 2017 with their Premio investigación preclínica . Also in 2017, he was awarded the Albany Medical Center Prize , which is endowed with 500,000 US dollars, for his work on the CRISPR system together with Emmanuelle Charpentier , Jennifer Doudna , Luciano Marraffini and Feng Zhang .
