Francisco Montejo Xiu († after 1557 ) was a Mayan prince of the Tutul Xiu family , the last Halach Huinik of Maní and an ally of Francisco de Montejo y León , son of the conquistador Francisco de Montejo .

Life

Francisco Montejo Xiu was a member of the ruling family of the Xiu. His father was Ah Çiyah Xiu († 1536), governor of Yacaman. He was one of the pilgrims to Chichén Itzá killed by the Cocom in 1536 . Francisco Montejo Xiu, who was named Ah Kukil Xiu until his baptism , formed a coalition with Francisco de Montejo y León in 1542, who was probably also his godfather. As ruler of one of the largest and most influential Mayan jurisdictions in Yucatán , he made a significant contribution to the success of the local Conquista . At the same time he was able to secure the recognition of the nobility and the continued existence of his social and economic supremacy for his family . He and his family now held the title Don . Between December 25, 1557 and January 6, 1558, Alonso Ortiz de Argueta , the Spanish governor in Yucatán, received homage from Francisco Montejo Xiu from Maní as a representative of his family on the occasion of Philip II's accession to the throne . Francisco Montejo Xiu was married to a distant relative, Doña María Xiu, daughter of Don Juan Xiu from Calotmul , but had no children of their own. His nephew, Don Francisco Xiu, succeeded him as the family leader.
