Ralph L. Roys
Ralph L. Roys (born February 14, 1879 in Greenville , Michigan , † 1965 in Seattle , Washington ) was an anthropologist and historian with a research focus on post-classical Maya culture in Yucatán . He received international recognition primarily for his translations and analyzes of medical, historical and administrative texts written during the colonial era.
Life
Roys graduated with a PhB ( Bachelor of Philosophy ) from the University of Michigan in 1900 . He first joined the family's timber company and lived in Vancouver from 1911 to 1940 , interrupted from 1906 by regular trips to Mexico . His first scientific article on the Maya appeared in 1920 . In 1921 he made his first research trip to the Yucatan . He was a member of the Central American Research Institute at Tulane University in New Orleans and the Department of Historical Research at the Carnegie Institution of Washington(since 2007: Carnegie Institution for Science ). He was also Professor of Anthropology at the University of Washington , honorary member of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland , and from 1965 - in recognition of his life's work in researching Mayan culture in Yucatán - an honorary doctorate at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán .
