Francisco Tito Yupanqui (also: Titu Yupanki ) (* 1550 in Copacabana (Bolivia) , † 1616 in Cusco ) was a Catholic Aymara evangelized by the Dominicans , who is best known for his wood carvings.

Life

Francisco Tito Yupanqui was a grandson of Huayna Cápac , the 11th King of the Inca , and a son of Cristóbal Vaca Túpac Inca , a half-brother of Atahualpa .

Yupanqui's most famous work is the Virgin of Copacabana (Virgen de Copacabana), also known as the "Dark Maiden" (Virgen Morena), which he carved in 1576 from dark wood. She wears a crown made of pure gold. His figure of the Virgin has been in Copacabana since February 2, 1583, today in the Basilica of Copacabana . Tito Yupanqui laid down his royal regalia , which he had inherited from his father, in front of the image of the Virgen de Copacabana. Since then, numerous miracles and healings have been attributed to her and she is venerated as the patron saint of Lake Titicaca .

The earliest sources about the origin of the cult around the "Virgin of Copacabana" are the "Historia del santuario de Nuestra Señora de Copacabana" by Augustinian Alonso Ramos Gavilán (1621) and the "Corónica moralizada del Orden de San Augustín en el Perú" by Antonio de la Calancha (1638). Calderón's comedy “La Aurora en Copacabana” is based on at least the first of the two works.

In 1600 Tito Yupanqui moved to Cusco and entered the local convent of the Augustinian order .

Beatification process

The Catholic Church has initiated the process for the beatification of Tito Yupanqui.
