Franciszek Piper (* 1941 ) is a Polish historian .

Life

Piper studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and received his doctorate there in 1979 . As early as 1965 he became an employee of the historical research department of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim , later becoming its director.

From 1965 to 1979 Piper undertook extensive studies of the use of labor in the Auschwitz concentration camps. From 1980 to 1995, studies were carried out to determine the number of victims in Auschwitz concentration camps with regard to the countries of origin and types of death. In doing so, he tied in with the scientific work of the former Auschwitz prisoner Georges Wellers (1905–1991). Since 2008, Piper has been working primarily on the preparation of the data from the death books and transport lists, on various overall presentations and partial studies. His book “The number of victims of Auschwitz” is considered by historians to be the standard work on this subject; since then, earlier estimates have hardly had any significance in specialist circles.
