Franco Ruault (* 1969 in Hohenems , Austria ) is a political scientist with a research focus on sexualised forms of violence in National Socialism and Nazi press history.

Life

He studied political science, contemporary history and media research at the University of Innsbruck , where he wrote his dissertation "Rassenschande". Anti-Semitic Sexual Fantasies and Persecution Practices 1920-1935 .

Ruault's main interest is research into the life and work of the Nuremberg Gauleiter and editor of the anti-Semitic propaganda magazine Der Stürmer , Julius Streicher .

In his first study New Creators of the German People - Julius Streicher in the Fight Against “Rassenschande” (2006), Ruault analyzes Streicher's work as a “pacemaker” for the exclusion and persecution of Jews in Germany. From a perspective critical of patriarchy , Ruault traces Streicher's life up to the promulgation of the so-called “ Nuremberg Blood Protection Laws ” in 1935. On the basis of a thorough research into Julius Streicher's life, Ruault analyzes the foundations and requirements for Streicher's success with his propaganda against “ racial disgrace ” in case studies . To this end, Ruault reconstructs Streicher's approach to promoting the exclusion and disenfranchisement of Jews in Germany. These include studies from the early days of the persecution of the Jews in Nuremberg in the early 1920s, but also the notorious "pillory actions" against "Jewish racial abusers" in Breslau in 1935.

In the follow-up study Deadly Masquerades - Julius Streicher and the “Solution to the Jewish Question” (2009), Ruault concentrates on a fundamental analysis of the anti-Jewish enemy image of the “Jewish racial abuser”, again from a perspective critical of patriarchy. In it, Ruault traces Julius Streicher's path from nature-loving race fanatic to Holocaust propagandist.

Ruault's approach, according to which the power strategy function of the Nazi forced Jewish question consists in a restitution strategy of the declining patriarchal system of rule, shifts the gender aspect to the center of his attention. Namely in his analysis of the anti-Jewish enemy images and the forms of persecution, especially the notorious "pillory actions". In his essay For a love so punished - the ritual of public hair-shearing on "disobedient" women , Ruault explains his core thesis using the example of a persecution story in Ulm. A young woman fell in love with a French prisoner of war in 1941 and fell into the clutches of the Gestapo, who ultimately publicly defamed her in a degrading manner and publicly shaved her hair.

The theoretical background for this case history of National Socialist persecution of so-called “disobedient” women is provided by Ruault in his essay The witch hunter as a state technician - Heinrich Himmler and the “H special order” . In this work Ruault examines the strange fascination of the Reichsführer SS, Heinrich Himmler, for the persecution of witches. In the "H special order", which was kept strictly secret, Himmler commissioned numerous researchers with the collection and documentation of torture practices and persecution stories of women accused of being "witches". As Ruault shows, Himmler constructed a supposedly "Jewish" story of oppression and persecution against German women and described the Jews as the initiators of modern witch persecution.

In his current study Business Model Hatred of Jews. Martin Hilti - “Volksdeutscher” entrepreneur in the Principality of Liechtenstein 1939-1945 Ruault examines the life and work of the Liechtenstein industrialist and founder of today's global corporation Hilti AG, Martin Hilti (1915-1997). Martin Hilti is portrayed as one of the most aggressive advocates of National Socialism in the Principality, who denounced, mocked and mocked Jews in the notorious Liechtenstein smear newspaper "Der Umbruch". Ruault is thus dedicating himself to one of the central taboos in Liechtenstein economic history. Because Martin Hilti's hatred of Jews was the political price paid for building up the company, as Ruault shows in detail. Martin Hilti, a staunch National Socialist, was all too willing to support the Gestapo and SD in order to build his company on the backs of the mocked and threatened Jews in Liechtenstein. The establishment of the so-called "Maschinenbau Hilti oHG" at the beginning of the 1940s was due to Martin Hilti's radical economic hatred of Jews, as Ruault shows.
