The SJ B (I) were the first steam locomotives of the Swedish State Railways with the wheel arrangement 1'B n2.

history

The first six locomotives of this type for line service were purchased in 1856 from Beyer, Peacock & Co. in Manchester , England . The machines had external cylinders and a drive wheel diameter of 1684 mm. The design and the drive wheel diameter turned out to be successful compared to other locomotive series from this period, so that many other railway companies procured such locomotives.

The first six locomotives were split up for use on the Södra Stambana to Malmö and the Västra Stambana to Gothenburg . The locomotives did not have a cab when they were delivered, but a simple wooden cab was added later.

Due to the good success in the driving service, more locomotives were ordered. A total of 45 type B (I) locomotives were built. Beyer, Peacock & Co. from England supplied 23 of them, five Nyköpings Mekaniska Verkstad in Nyköping , nine Nydqvist och Holm in Trollhättan and eight Motala Verkstad in Motala .

numbering

Regardless of the manufacturer and year of construction, all locomotives were given a name. In accordance with the allocation for use on the Södra Stambana and the Västra Stambana, they were given serial numbers that began with the abbreviation SSB or WSB.

A numbering plan created in 1864 lists WSB 1 to 32 in parallel as B 1 to B 32 with the same original numbers, SSB 41 to 46 became B 41 to B 46 and SSB 11 to 15 as B 51 to B 55 referred to as. These numbers beginning with B did not yet designate a series, at that time each individual locomotive was run as an "own series" . Later B 94 to B 98 (Nydqvist och Holm, 1868) and B 119 to B 122 (Nydqvist och Holm, 1872) were added.

In 1876 all locomotives were designated as the B series.

SJ Ba, SJ Bb, SJ Bb1, SJ Bb2

Between 1882 and 1889, 19 locomotives were fitted with new boilers and were given the new class designation Bb in 1886 .

The locomotives with the old boilers were sorted into the Ba series from 1886 . Since the boiler replacement coincided with the re-sorting date, locomotives already sorted into the Ba series were converted to Bb .

The 19 locomotives of the Bb series were split up again in 1890. From this point on there were 17 Bb1 and two of the Bb2 series .

Retirement

The B series soon became too weak for the heavier trains and so the locomotives were all shut down until 1909. The last locomotive was the Bb1 8 , which was scrapped in Örebro in 1909 .

The decommissioning began much earlier, the first Ba , the Ba 6 , was taken out of service in 1886. The two Bb2s disappeared in 1903 and 1905, the first Bb1s were shut down in 1895.

KNJ No. 3

One locomotive was sold to Krylbo-Norbergs Järnväg in 1902 and was given the number 3 there. It ran there until 1913 and was scrapped.

Museum locomotive

The Bb1 43 Prins August locomotive , the former SSB 3 built in 1856, was kept in 1906 for a railway museum to be built later and restored to its original condition. It is now part of the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle .
