François Eudes de Mézeray

François Eudes de Mézeray (* 1610 in Ri near Argentan , Normandy , † July 10, 1683 in Paris ) was a French writer and historian .

Life

François Eudes was born the son of a surgeon . During his stay in Paris, he adopted the addition de Mézeray, chosen according to a location . This appendix should cover his simple origins and reflect a better social position.

Mézeray studied at the University of Caen, then at the Sorbonne. In Paris he earned his living from satirical writings and other literary works.

For two years he was reluctantly a directing officer in the artillery in the army and took part in the campaigns in Flanders .

Mézeray became a historian of France and was accepted into the Académie Française in 1648 as the successor to Vincent Voiture . From 1675 he was (as successor to Valentin Conrart ) permanent secretary of the Académie. He played a major role in the creation of the dictionary of 1694.

One of his brothers was the Father and Founder of the Order of Eudists, John (Jean) Eudes .
