Franjo Vilhar Kalski ( Franz Seraphin Vilhar ; born January 5, 1852 in Senožeče , † March 4, 1928 in Zagreb ) was a composer.

biography

The son of the Slovenian poet Miroslav Vilhar had his first music lessons in Ljubljana and studied with František Blažek and František Zdeněk Skuherský in Prague from 1870 to 1872 . In 1872 he founded a music school in Temesvar with his father-in-law, the composer Josef Wenzel Hajek . In 1873 he also became the cathedral organist here. Two compositions for a four-part male choir have survived from this period: Gondoliera and you are like a flower (after Heinrich Heine ).

From 1881 to 1884, Vilhar directed the Karlovac Municipal Music School. After leading choirs in Sisak, Split and Gospić, he became the Regens Choir of St. Mark's Church in Zagreb in 1891 .

Works

Vilhar was best known as a composer of choral songs and a collector of folk songs. He also composed instrumental works, three operas and one operetta.
