Frank Cadogan Cowper

Frank Cadogan Cowper (born October 16, 1877 , † November 17, 1958 ) was an English artist who was referred to as "the last of the Pre-Raphaelites ".

Cowper was born in Wicken, Northamptonshire, the son of the writer and pioneer of offshore sailing, Frank Cowper. He studied art at St John's Wood Art School in 1896 and then at the Royal Academy School from 1897 to 1902 . Its first exhibition took place at the Royal Academy in 1899. His first major success two years later was his picture An Aristocrat answering the Summons to Execution, Paris 1791 (1901). In 1902, he studied with Edwin Austin Abbey for six months before embarking on a study trip to Italy.

He created paintings primarily with watercolors and oils , but also worked as a book illustrator - for example for Sir Sidney Lee's book The Imperial Shakespeare . He participated in the murals in the English Parliament building in 1910 along with Byam Shaw , Ernest Board and Henry Arthur Payne.

In the course of the next few years he concentrated primarily on portrait paintings, but also continued his paintings on historical and literary motifs.

In old age he left London in favor of Cirencester in Gloucestershire .

His The Ugly Duckling was voted the Most Impressive Painting at the Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum in 2005 by visitors .
