Frank Henry Stubbings

Frank Henry Stubbings FSA (March 8, 1915 , † October 29, 2005 ) was a British classical philologist , classical archaeologist , prehistorian and mycenaeologist .

After attending the Perse School in Cambridge , Stubbings graduated from 1933 to study classical philology ( Classical tripos ) at the local Emmanuel College . There he won, among other things, the Porson Prize for Greek verse composition . After graduation, he was accepted as a student at the British School at Athens in 1937 and participated in the excavations in Ithaca and Mycenae . His teacher at the time was Alan Wace , the excavator of Mycenae. During the Second World War he was a member of the staff of the British embassy in Athens , and later that of the British embassy to the Greek government in Cairo . On his return in 1945 he was appointed Fellow and Director of Studies in Classics at Emmanuel College. In 1949 he was appointed University Lecturer in Prehellenic Archeology . To the Ph.D. Stubbings received his doctorate with an investigation into the export of Mycenaean ceramics to the Levant , which was published in 1951. In 1955 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries . He was a librarian from 1959, Vice-Master from 1965 to 1969, and finally a lifetime fellow at his college. After retiring in 1980, he became Honorary Keeper of the College Library's Special Collections. From 1974 to 1982 he served the university as a university orator who wrote speeches and other official texts for the university in Latin. From 1981 to 1991 he was chairman of the Cambridge Bibliographical Society.

Since 1945 Stubbings was married to the classical archaeologist Joan Laing.

Stubbings' research area was the archeology of the Homeric period , the Greek Bronze Age and the prehistory and early history of Greece and the Aegean as a whole.

In addition, Stubbings published various papers on the City and University of Cambridge.
