Frank Hill (born November 25, 1957 in Rostock ) is a German composer and guitarist .

Life

The paternal family has a musical tradition; professional musicians have been recorded since 1700. Hill entered the Rostock Conservatory at the age of six, began studying medicine at Rostock University in 1978 and graduated in 1986 from the "Franz Liszt" University of Music in Weimar . Since then he has lived in Berlin .

At first he appeared primarily as a concert guitarist, festival director and methodical author. In 1986 he became one of the few guitarists in the catalog of the artist agency of the GDR , and in 1988 he became a member of the Association of Composers and Musicologists of the GDR . He used very far-reaching concert tours from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s in Europe, Asia and overseas to collect intercultural impressions. He directed festivals in Berlin for more than ten years, the climax of which were the international festivals for chamber music and guitar in the Konzerthaus Berlin in 1992 and 1994 . The realization in one of the leading places in musical life was considered a novelty for the guitar. Part of the festivals were composition competitions at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin . In 1993 and 1995 Hill published a guitar school ( Friedrich Hofmeister Musikverlag ), which was characterized by his own pieces and which uses a new method to adapt the guitar to orchestral instruments. Abel Carlevaro (1916–2001) saw this as a continuation of his work. In 2009 Hill was appointed honorary professor for guitar and methodology at the “Carl Maria von Weber” University of Music in Dresden .

Art of entertainment

The perception of the compositional work of Frank Hill began in 1988 with the first publishing contract in West Berlin (Edition Margaux / since 2000 group AMA Verlag ). He found his tonal identity in 1995 with a series of compositions for violin and guitar, two of which Hill premiered in May 1996 with the Berliner Philharmoniker and composer Holm Birkholz in the Konzerthaus Berlin .

In 1996, Hills also began teaching part-time as a classical guitarist in the jazz department of the Dresden University of Music, which had an impact on his compositional work and led to the self-labeling of his music as the art of entertainment . An essential aspect of old and classical music is important, there is no separation of “seriousness” and “entertainment”. Hill understands all of today's audible epochs and styles as breeding grounds; combines, for example, traditions of contrapuntal art music with physical rhythmic phrases. The narrative and pictorial way of composing - the resulting suggestions are comparable to literary storylines - is reflected in the titles, e.g. B .: ... and if we say it, it gets lost ... for piano trio, Morning of a Faun for violin, Sometimes, in the night for piano, ... of deep blue ... for 3 clarinets (Bb and bass).

The 1996 concert was followed by further world premieres in the Konzerthaus Berlin . In 2004, 2005 and 2009 there were full-length portrait concerts in the Berlin Ballhaus Naunynstraße .
