Frank Hotaling

Frank Hotaling (born April 4, 1900 as John Francis Hotaling in New York , United States , † April 13, 1977 in Woodland Hills ) was an American film architect and western specialist.

Life

John Francis 'Frank' Hotaling first worked as a draftsman and joined the cinema in 1923 as a small actor. In the following years he also appeared in front of the camera as a double for several stars, including Clark Gable in " Goldfieber " (Call of the Wild, 1935). He then worked as a draftsman in various equipment departments.

In the war year 1944 he started working as a designer for film sets. The western genre became Hotaling's preferred field of work. In addition to an abundance of B-films, John Hotaling also provided some top productions by John Ford . The production designer received an Oscar nomination for his performance on Der Sieger , one of the few non-westerns in Ford and Hotaling's careers .
