Frank Assunto
Frank Joseph Assunto (born January 29, 1932 in New Orleans ; † February 25, 1974 there ) was an American bandleader and trumpeter of Dixieland Jazz .
Life
He was the son of trombonist and banjo player Jacob (Papa Jac) Assunto (1905–1985). He is best known as the founder of the Dukes of Dixieland in 1948 with his father and brother Fred (Trombone, 1929–1966), an important band in the New Orleans Revival. They emerged from a talent show by Horace Heidt and initially toured with this, later they were a permanent fixture in New Orleans in the Famous Door, undertook a tour to Japan (1964) and appeared a lot on television. There are also many recordings of them. Most notable is a session of the trumpeter under the direction of Herb Ellis with swingers like Buddy Tate , Ray Bryant and Gus Johnson in 1962 for Columbia .
