Frank N. Pieke

Frank Nikolaas Pieke (born September 23, 1957 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch sinologist and anthropologist and was director of the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in Berlin from August 2018 to January 2020 .

Life

Frank N. Pieke studied cultural anthropology, history of modern China and Chinese studies at the University of Amsterdam , Beijing University and the University of California at Berkeley . In 1992 he received his PhD in cultural anthropology from Berkeley.

From 1995 to 2010 Pieke taught Politics and Society of Modern China at St Cross College at Oxford University . From 2007 to 2010 Pieke was founding director of the Oxford China Center. In 2010 he was appointed to a professorship at the Chair of Modern Chinese Studies at Leiden University. From 2016 to 2017 he was the scientific director of the Institute for Regional Studies at the University of Leiden and from 2013 to 2018 he was the director of the LeidenAsiaCentre.

On May 24, 2018, Stiftung Mercator announced that Pieke would be the new director of the Mercator Institute for China Studies. He took over the position on August 1, 2018. Under Pieke's leadership, MERICS initiated a Europeanization of the institute's agenda. Pieke headed the institute until January 2020.
