Frank J. Scherschel (born March 24, 1907 , † May 23, 1981 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American journalist and photographer .

Scherschel initially worked for The Milwaukee Journal from 1926 to 1942 before joining Life magazine. For Life he shot photos of World War II , especially of the Allied landings in Normandy . The special thing about his pictures is that he did not take pictures of combat operations, but depicted the preparations and everyday life of the Allied soldiers. His pictures are one of the few color photos that exist about the Second World War. In 2012, numerous pictures of him were published for the first time. In addition to the photos in Normandy, he also reported on the Pacific War , in 1947 on the wedding of Elizabeth II , who was still a princess at the time, and on the Democratic National Convention of 1956. Scherschel also reported on agricultural collectivization in Czechoslovakia and took several photos Winston Churchill , art collector Peggy Guggenheim, and numerous other people or sporting events.

In 1950, Scherschel received the Joseph A. Sprague Memorial Award from the National Press Photographers Association , one of the highest honors for photojournalism. From 1962 he worked for the United States Information Agency in Washington until he retired in 1972 and opened a photo camera business in Baraboo , Wisconsin. He died at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison in 1981 at the age of 74.
