Life

Sparing studied history and Romance languages at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . He was a freelance researcher at the Düsseldorf Memorial and has worked as a project manager for the LVR project to process and document the history of people with disabilities and mental illnesses in institutions of the Rhineland Regional Association since 1945 at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. He has published several books on this subject, some as a co-author.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Sparing has been particularly interested in the recent history of the European Roma and above all in the history of persecution during the National Socialist era.

In 1997 he and Kerstin Griese initiated research into the Medical Academy during the Nazi era in Düsseldorf. This resulted in a collection of essays and other works. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger judged the book Rassismus, Lager, Genölkermord , written with Karola Fings , that the work was “the first comprehensive investigation into the persecution of gypsies by the Nazis in Cologne and the surrounding area”. Marc von Lüpke-Schwarz also made positive comments about the work and the large amount of sources that have been evaluated.
