Frank Udvari
Frank Udvari (born January 2, 1924 in Srpski Miletić , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † August 13, 2014 in London , Ontario , Canada ) was a Canadian ice hockey referee .
Life
Frank Udvari, who was born in Yugoslavia but raised in Kitchener , Ontario, played baseball during his youth . In 1948 he was coach of a junior team and then began a career as a referee. In 1951 he directed his first games in the American Hockey League . In his first two years he had to contend with controversial decisions and in several games he lost control of the course of the game, but only a few years later Udvari rose to one of the best referees and was also often used in the National Hockey League . In 1966 he ended his career as a referee and became the superior of the NHL referees. On December 30, 1978, he returned for a game again as a referee in the NHL, as Dave Newell had sustained an injury and could not continue the game.
In 1973 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
