After graduating from high school in 1984, Hitzing began teaching mathematics and geography at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald , which she continued from 1985 at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg . In 1989 she completed her studies as a qualified teacher and has since worked as a teacher at what is now the mainstream school in Wolkramshausen .

In 2005, Hitzing was elected to the state board of the FDP Thuringia . In the state elections in 2014 , the FDP left the state parliament, which meant that Hitzing, who had run for second place on the FDP state list, also lost her mandate. In January 2015, Hitzing was unanimously nominated as a candidate for the district council election in the Nordhausen district on April 26, 2015 and achieved 17.4 percent.

On September 17, 2015, Hitzing resigned as state chairman for personal reasons. Her successor was initially provisional Dirk Bergner ; In November 2015, Thomas L. Kemmerich was elected as the new state chairman at a special party conference.
