Life

politics

It wasn't until the summer of 1998 that Arens began to be actively involved in politics. In March 1999, at the Thuringian FDP state party conference, he was surprisingly elected state chairman. At the FDP federal party conference in 1999 , he became an assessor in the FDP federal executive committee. After the European elections in 1999 , he hit the headlines when he was the only state chairman, due to the poor performance of the FDP , calling for the resignation of its then federal chairman Wolfgang Gerhardt .

For the state election in Thuringia on September 12, 1999 , he appeared as a clear opponent of a possible red-red coalition and spoke out in favor of a coalition between his party and the CDU . Three days before the election, he made a personal statement recommending that the voters give the CDU the second vote in order to prevent a majority from the SPD and PDS . The then FDP federal chairman Wolfgang Gerhardt and the then general secretary Guido Westerwelle showed no understanding for this approach. At Gerhardt's request, the Thuringian FDP regional association initiated a party expulsion process against Arens on September 10, 1999, two days before the election day. The FDP got 1.1 percent of the vote in the election. Thereupon Arens was released from his duties as state chairman by the FDP state executive committee, but obtained an injunction against this decision at the Erfurt district court , so that a special FDP party conference was convened for November 9, 1999.
