history

The community gives 834 as the year of the first documentary mention. According to Wolfgang Kahl , however, there are already evidence from the period between 802 and 817.

In today's district of Wernrode there was a high medieval mansion in the area of the later still existing property. In 1278 and 1282 an Alexander Wernrode is named, who was probably the owner of the manor. Only the area of the former castle area remains. Also on the eastern part of the Zengenberg, a mountain on the northern edge of the Hainleite west of Wernrode, there was a castle that served to secure the places Wernrode and Wolkramshausen. In addition, the fortifications controlled and secured the trade route over the Hainleite. The plateau of the castle can still be recognized by a two meter high and eight meter wide wall with a moat.

Since the end of 1816 the place belonged to the Prussian province of Saxony . In the 19th century Wolkramshausen was known for its sugar beet cultivation and its sugar factory.

During the Second World War , more than 1,000 prisoners of war as well as men and women from the occupied countries of Western and Eastern Europe had to do forced labor in the army ammunition facility, 145 people perishing in an explosion in 1942. They were housed in three barracks in Wolkramshausen, Wernrode and Ludwigshall.

On January 1, 2019, the communities Wolkramshausen, Friedrichsthal , Kleinbodungen , Kraja , Hainrode , Nohra , Wipperdorf and Etzelsrode as well as the city of Bleicherode merged to form the new city and rural community of Bleicherode. The community Wolkramshausen was a member of the administrative community Hainleite . The district of Wernrode , which is about 2 km south of the main town, belonged to the community.
