Location of Wernrode in Thuringia |
Wernrode is a district of the town of Bleicherode in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia .
geography
The district of Wernrode is located on the northern slope of the Hainleite and two kilometers south of Wolkramshausen in a formerly favorable strategic location. The economic conditions in the lower areas, as in Wolkramshausen, were then superior to the strategic conditions for further development.
history
For 802 to 817, Wolfgang Kahl documents the first documentary mention of Wernroda in his book. In Wernroda there was a high medieval manor in the area of the later still existing property. In 1278 and 1282 an Alexander Wernrode is named, who was probably the owner of the manor.
Also on the eastern part of the Zengenberg , a mountain on the northern edge of the Hainleite west of Wernroda, there was a castle that served to secure the place and Wolkramshausen. In addition, the fortifications controlled and secured the trade route over the Hainleite. The plateau of the castle can still be recognized by a two meter wide wall with a moat.
In the village there is a renaissance castle (under monument protection), which was built around 1600 to replace an earlier moated castle. It was expanded around 1800, rebuilt and expanded again at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1573 two gentlemen from Schiedung were named at the castle and the estate, from 1600 the von Jagemann family. Several owners changed in the 19th century. In addition to the castle, there are partially preserved, also renovated farm buildings (also under monument protection) of the manor that used to belong to it. This was "settled" in 1930 on 12 settlers and small farmers.
During the Second World War , the small community had to mourn 18 war dead. A war memorial from 1934 in the churchyard commemorates the fallen and missing of both world wars.
During the GDR era, the “ Gladys Marín ” children's holiday camp was set up in and around the palace .
Since 2013 a stately former residential building has been in disrepair, which also belonged to the manor complex and was used as a holiday home.
In 1995 the village was inhabited by a total of 283 people.
Not far from the castle is a large, striking stone cross on a lawn.
Wernrode was part of the municipality Wolkramshausen , which was incorporated into the city of Bleicherode on January 1, 2019.
