Kraja is a district of the city and rural community of Bleicherode in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia.
geography
The community lies at the foot of the Bleicheröder mountains . The highest elevation within the local area is 459.7 m high in the south of Krajaer Kopf.
Waters
The Krajaer Bach flows through Kraja . Its source area is west of the village of Haynrode in the Ohm Mountains . It flows into the Bode between Kleinbodungen and Lipprechteode .
geology
The near-surface geological subsoil is formed in the area of the location by the rocks of the middle red sandstone . The terrain initially climbs moderately steeply towards the Krajaer Kopf. In this area, the clays, plasters and marls of the upper red sandstone are to be found. The abrupt change in geology is indicated by the sudden steepening of the terrain, which is caused by the morphologically harder limestones of the Lower Muschelkalk . The Krajaer Kopf can therefore be recognized from a distance as a layer . The limestone layers form a layer surface on the Krajaer Kopf. Towards the north, entire layers of layers slipping off the plastic subsurface of the Röttone rock fragments, crevices and ditches formed. These fragments of clods extend into the Krajaer Kopf area to this day.
history
Kraja was first mentioned in a document in 1182. According to the legend, in 933 scattered parts of the Huns (Hungarians), defeated by King Henry I in the Battle of the Unstrut, penetrated into this area.
Old weapons and riding rungs have been found on the Krajaer Kopf. That is why it is said that a battle against the Turks once took place there. That was at a time when there were no villages around the Bleicheröder mountains. The Turkish general is said to have died in this fight. He is said to be buried under the stone cross on the road from Kraja to Lipprechterode. With the Turkish army came a beautiful Turkish princess named Crajamine. According to the legend, she liked the valley so much that she built a village there that is now called Kraja. The name of the place (old spelling Craja) is brought into context here.
The Protestant church in the main street was built in the 17th century from rubble stones and square blocks, it is a simple hall church with a recessed, polygonal choir and western roof tower.
Until 1993, a shaft of the Sollstedt potash mine was operated on the southwestern edge of Kraja. A 25 m high spoil dump and the ruins of the factories have been preserved.
On January 1, 2019, the municipalities of Kraja, Friedrichsthal , Kleinbodungen , Etzelsrode , Hainrode , Nohra , Wipperdorf and Wolkramshausen as well as the city of Bleicherode merged to form the new city and rural community of Bleicherode. Bleicherode was already a fulfilling municipality for the municipality of Kraja.
