Obergebra is a town founded on January 1, 2019 Country municipality city Bleicherode in the district of Nordhausen in Thuringia .

geography

The place lies between the Bleicheröder mountains and the Hainleite in the Wippertal . The highest elevation of the Hainleite, the Katzenstein (colloquially also Kattstein) with a height of 476.8 m above sea level is located in the district of Obergebra.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1162. The oldest church dates from the 3rd Century. The current church was built in 1517, but its tower is older.

From 1912 to 1933, potash salt was mined in two shafts . From 1933 to 1945 these served as an army ammunition facility . After the Second World War, they were a training center for the Sollstedt potash plant . After the reunification, an industrial area was established.

During the Second World War had at least 200 prisoners of war , and women and men from Poland , the Soviet Union , the Netherlands , France and Italy forced labor afford: in the Army munitions plant Obergebra , the sawmill Singoll and in the disused weaving Otto Engler with the installed there Department of Fieseler Aircraft Works .

During a visit to a pub on the eve of May 1st, 1952, a local SED functionary died, probably from a heart attack. Two members of the CDU were sentenced to death as alleged perpetrators in May 1952 and executed on September 6th. In 1990, a memorial stone with the inscription " Innocent executed " was inaugurated in the cemetery . In 1991 the sentence was overturned and the victims were rehabilitated. The urns of those executed were transferred from a mass grave in Dresden to the Obergebra cemetery and solemnly buried. A hero memorial for the deceased functionary was removed after the fall of the Wall.

From July 1, 1950 to May 5, 1984, Obergebra was merged with Niedergebra to form the Gebra / Hainleite community. On December 1, 2007, Obergebra merged with the town of Bleicherode, whose district Obergebra is today, as part of a voluntary integration. On October 1, 2008, a new village community center with a ballroom was inaugurated in Obergebra, while the renovation and renovation work on the “Alte Schmiede” building was completed. From now on, the local associations and the mayor's office are housed here. In 2012, the town of Obergebra celebrated as part of a festival week from 2–9 September its 850th anniversary. On January 1, 2019, Obergebra became an independent village part of the rural community of Bleicherode and has not been a part of Bleicherode since then.
