Hotel and restaurant Kreuz

The Kreuz Cooperative has been running the restaurant and hotel of the same name in Solothurn since 1973. This is the oldest " cooperative pub " in Switzerland and a traditional meeting place for left-wing political movements.

history

The “Kreuz” restaurant has existed since 1601. Its character before it was converted into a cooperative is described as a “dingy harbor bar” or restaurant with a red light area . The cooperative successor to the restaurant and hotel quickly turned into a left-wing alternative meeting place. In 1979 the hotel was given up; after that, "Kreuz" employees lived there for some time in a shared apartment . The hotel has existed again since 1985. The restaurant and hotel rooms are described in a publication on Swiss cooperatives as "simple, practical and beautiful". The writer Otto F. Walter was one of the supporters of the cooperative in its early years . Also associated with the “cross” in the media were other prominent personalities such as Peter Bichsel as guests or former employees .

From a spin-off in 1976, today's Baseltor cooperative emerged, which in addition to the hotel and restaurant "Baseltor" operates other restaurants in Solothurn and has also taken over the operation of the historic Solothurn hotel "Krone".

In 1982 the group for a Switzerland without an army (GSoA) was founded in the "Kreuz" , which still holds its meetings there. Especially during the Solothurn Film and Literature Days , which had their origins in the “Kreuz”, it is a meeting place for the left establishment in Switzerland.

Around the year 2000 the restaurant was facing financial ruin. Since then, as a result of an orientation towards quality and a middle-class style of cooking with international influences, the company has become profitable again and popular beyond the left-wing scene.

Cultural program

The cultural program includes music, literature and cabaret events . In recent years, bands from different musical genres such as jazz , world music , blues and singer-songwriters have appeared.

documentation

Paul Riniker dedicated the documentary Ein Beiz ohne Boss to the bar in 1984 . Rolf Niederhauser made the "Cross" the subject of the book in 1978. A few young people are fed up with waiting for the end of the mere assumption that there are better forms of human community.
