The Franklin Reef is a reef off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands off Cape Cape Denison in the Commonwealth Bay and is north-northwest of the Tich Rocks .
Participants of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson discovered it. The reef is named after one of the sled dogs on the research trip. Its namesake, in turn, is the British rear admiral and polar explorer John Franklin (1786–1847), who died on his way to search for the Northwest Passage .
