Frans Neirynck

Frans Neirynck (born May 15, 1927 in Wingene ; † October 20, 2012 in Bertem ) was a Belgian theologian and university professor .

Live and act

After studying at the Sint-Jozefscollege in Tielt , Neirynck attended the Klein Seminarie Roeselare in the city of Roeselare . Neirynck was ordained a priest in Bruges on May 30, 1953. Afterwards, from 1953 to 1957, he studied at the Faculty of Theology at the KU Leuven , where he obtained his doctorate in 1957; defended his dissertation, Childhood Story in the Gospel of Luke , under the direction of Albert Descamps. Neirynck came into contact with the Koninklijke Academie through his dissertation. From 1957 to 1960 he was a professor at the Major Seminary in Bruges . At the end of the year on December 20, 1960, he was appointed the successor to his supervisor in Leuven. On July 31, 1962, Neirynck was appointed full professor in the theological faculty, a role he held until 1992. In 1962 he became a full professor of New Testament exegesis . From 1968 to 1972 he was dean of the newly founded Dutch theological faculty. With the support of his colleague Maurits Sabbe , he initiated an English-language teaching program that increased the international esteem of his faculty. Together with Maurits Sabbe, he founded the Flemish Bible Foundation in 1968 . Neirynck retired in 1992, but continued his scientific activities.

As a scientist and researcher, Neirynck was very strict in his work and devoted his entire research life to the literary study of the Gospels.

On the synoptic problem , Neirynck expressed himself as a representative of the Markus priority , who saw the emergence of minor agreements in a post-Markin context.
