Frans Verhaeghe

Frans Verhaeghe (* 1945 in Ostend ) is a Belgian historian and medieval archaeologist . He is a pioneer in researching the everyday material culture of the European Middle Ages .

Life

Verhaeghe studied history with a focus on archeology at the University of Ghent with Adriaan Verhulst and Siegfried De Laet . In 1967 he completed his studies with a master's thesis on lead-glazed earthenware from excavations in Antwerp. After graduating, he worked on a research project of the Belgian National Fund for Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NFWO), which aimed to develop medieval archeology in Flanders . In 1969 Verhaeghe accepted a position as a research assistant at Ghent University, where he received his doctorate in 1974.

Following his doctorate, Verhaeghe was given a teaching position at Ghent University and held seminars on medieval archeology and excavation methodology. In 1977 he got a permanent research assignment at the NFWO. This position allowed Verhaeghe to publish an average of five publications a year in the 1980s and 1990s. Altogether, Verhaeghe wrote almost 200 publications, which essentially deal with everyday medieval culture in Central Europe and its material legacies, such as ceramics and glasses, as well as the development of modern excavation methods.

In 1991 Verhaeghe moved from the Ghent Archaeological Institute to the Institute for the History of the Middle Ages at the same university. Between 1993 and 1998 he was Research Director of the NFWO. In 1998 he was appointed to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and was given the chair of archeology.

In 2005 he took early retirement for health reasons.

Memberships

Verhaeghe has been a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London since 1983 . From 1993 to 2002 he was a member of the Koninklijke Commissie voor Monumenten en Landschappen . Verhaeghe is also a member of the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and the Flemish Institute for Cultural Heritage (IAP).
