František Faltus (born January 5, 1901 in Vienna , † October 6, 1989 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak civil engineer and leading steel construction expert in Czechoslovakia .

Faltus studied civil engineering from 1918 to 1923 at the Technical University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1923 with the dissertation Contribution to the calculation of undefined frameworks . He then worked for the steel manufacturer Waagner-Biró in Vienna and, from 1926, for Škoda in Pilsen. He supported the introduction of welding techniques in steel construction for bridges and other structures with great enthusiasm and was a pioneer in this field. In 1930 he designed the first fully welded steel truss bridge in Pilsen, followed by the first fully welded arch bridge, also in Pilsen. His steel bridge with composite girder as the carriageway in Bytča was also an innovation in 1952.

In 1945 he became a professor of steel construction at the Technical University in Prague (the chair was offered to him as early as 1938, but he could not take it because of the German occupation ).

In addition to welded steel structures, he also dealt with buckling and theory of steel arch structures.

He was an honorary member of the International Association for Bridge & Structural Engineering (IABSE), an honorary doctorate from the TH Dresden and a corresponding member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences .
