František Svoboda (born July 5, 1905 in Vienna ; † July 6, 1948 ) was a Czech football player . With Czechoslovakia he was runner-up in 1934.

Club career

Svoboda came to Slavia Prague in 1926 . The beefy center forward was known for his powerful long-range shot. With Slavia Svoboda was national champion eight times. In the 1934/35 season he was top scorer with 27 goals .

In the first division Svoboda scored a total of 101 goals for Slavia and is thus a member of the club ligových kanonýrů .

In 1930 there was a change affair around Svoboda. He refused to extend his contract and no longer ran for Slavia. He wrote to an advisor that he was going to move to Sparta Prague and was supposed to collect 100,000 crowns for it. However, the consultant also had an assurance that he would receive compensation of 50,000 crowns if the transfer did not take place. When these agreements became public, Svoboda revoked the change and stayed with Slavia. After much back and forth he didn't have to pay the compensation.

National team

In the Czechoslovak national team , Svoboda played 43 times, scoring 22 goals. This makes him one of the most successful goal scorers in Czechoslovakia.

He made his debut on June 6, 1926 in the 2-1 defeat by Hungary in Budapest .

At the World Cup in 1934 he was part of the Czechoslovak family. He made three games and scored a goal in the victorious quarter-finals against Switzerland .

Svoboda played the last game for the ČSR on May 15, 1937, his team lost to Scotland 1: 3.
