Franz Alber

Franz Alber (born July 24, 1935 in Meran ) is a South Tyrolean politician. As an exponent of the South Tyrolean People's Party , he was mayor of Merano, a member of the state parliament and the state government .

Professionally, Alber initially worked as a primary school teacher. From 1969 to 1988 he represented the South Tyrolean People's Party in the Merano municipal council. In his hometown, he first served as city councilor for school, culture and sport from 1972 to 1974 and then as vice mayor until 1980. In 1980 Alber took over the office of Mayor of Merano, but then again served as Vice Mayor from 1983. In 1985 he became head of the city for the second time, before he was elected to the South Tyrolean state parliament in 1988 and at the same time to the regional council of Trentino-South Tyrol , in which he held a mandate until 1993. From 1989 to 1994 he worked in the state government in the Durnwalder I cabinet as state councilor for public works and local authorities. From 1995 to 2005 he reigned a third time as Mayor of Merano. During these years he was also initially Vice President and finally President of the South Tyrolean Association of Municipalities . In 2008 he was awarded the Decoration of Honor of the State of Tyrol .
