Franz Bächtiger

Franz Bächtiger (born October 4, 1939 in Uznach ; † August 31, 1999 ) was a Swiss cultural historian and author .

Life

Bächtiger grew up in the city of St. Gallen in the Rotmonten district . He attended the canton school at Burggraben , at that time the only public high school in the canton of St. Gallen. He studied history and received his doctorate in Munich in 1969 with a thesis on the interpretation of fate in German Renaissance graphics . Bächtiger became a curator at the Historical Museum in Bern . In addition, from 1980 he held a teaching position at the University of Bern . In 1981 he became a private lecturer in cultural history with a special focus on iconography .

As early as 1981 Bächtiger conceived the exhibition Rudolf Minger and Robert Grimm. The Swiss way to the welfare state . In the following years he built up “the first collection on everyday culture of the 20th century in Switzerland”. This resulted in the highly regarded exhibition Change in Everyday Life in 1994 . Bächtiger also put together an extensive collection of political caricatures , which are now kept in his estate in the Bern Burger Library.
