Franz Bauer (historian)

Franz J. Bauer (born March 27, 1952 in Moosburg an der Isar ) is a German historian .

Life

Franz Bauer studied German studies and history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and received his doctorate in 1981 under Gerhard A. Ritter with a thesis on refugee policy in Bavaria 1945–1950 . He then worked as a university assistant to Dieter Albrecht at the University of Regensburg . His habilitation took place in 1989 in Regensburg (family biographical studies on the German bourgeoisie in the 19th century) .

After receiving a scholarship from the Munich Historical College in 1989/90 , he held a visiting professorship at the German Historical Institute in Rome in 1991/92 .

Bauer held a Fiebiger professorship at the LMU Munich from 1993 until he moved to the University of Regensburg in 1995. As successor to Dieter Albrecht, he held the chair of modern and contemporary history there until 2017.

His main research interests are monumental symbolism and political architecture in the nation state, the comparative history of ideas and mentality of industrial modernity in Europe and the history of Italy from state unification to fascism.
