Franz Bockel was the son of a ship smith in Klostersande near Elmshorst. He learned from his father and after the wandering worked for twelve years as a master blacksmith. After that he was alternately tobacco manufacturer, soap boiler, innkeeper and bookseller. He tried to publish his own weekly paper, but then became an employee of the “Itzehoer Wochenblatt” and various daily newspapers.

He later published works on his own, e.g. B. "The Song of the Ships", "The Man", "The Chimney Sweep", "The Misunderstanding" or "Instippen".

In old age Bockel came to the Nortorf poorhouse. At the request of Johann Meyer , Bockel received from the German Schiller Foundation from 1877 an annual grant of 300 marks. Shortly before his death, he suffered from paranoia.

Bockel was awarded the coronation medal by King Christian VIII .
