Franz Brandl (miner)

Franz Brandl (born February 17, 1926 in Bad Königswart , Czechoslovakia , † January 25, 2008 in Nentershausen ) was a German miner . In 1951 he was the first to receive the Federal Cross of Merit .

Life

Brandl was a displaced person from Bad Königswart in the Sudetenland , who had spent six years in Soviet captivity and returned home in 1950. He worked as a miner in the Sontra copper mine of the Kurhessische Kupferschiefer-AG in Hessen. On November 26, 1950, he saved the lives of two colleagues in the Reichenbergschacht when water broke in at a depth of about 300 meters. At the suggestion of the Hessian Prime Minister Georg-August Zinn , Federal President Theodor Heuss personally presented him with the first Federal Cross of Merit on September 19, 1951 for this rescue act.
