Franz Czernicky (* 16th September 1902 ; † 16th June 1973 ), and Franz Cernicky was an Austrian football player and coach , who in the 1920s and -30er years, four championship titles with Slavia Prague won in 1927 and once in the national team was deployed .

Club career

The versatile Czernicky had already been active for several seasons as a supplementary player in the SK Slovan Wien when he made his breakthrough as a regular in 1925. After he had already jumped in as a goalkeeper, he was to be used in defense, as an outside runner and in the storm row for the next two years, where he was finally able to secure the position of the left runner. After 1926 had looked out a respectable midfield position, Slovan ended the following season on the penultimate place in the table.

Czernicky then left the club and moved to the Czechoslovak top club Slavia Prague. In the Red-Whites he was mainly used as a defender and was initially able to win the Cup title twice in a row (each against Sparta ). In 1929 the first championship title followed and the team around František Plánička , Emil Seifert , Antonín Puč and František Svoboda became the dominant force in Czechoslovak football, which celebrated three more championship titles in the following four years. In 1929, Slavia also reached the final in the Mitropacup , which was lost to Újpesti FC , with Czernicky not being used in the two finals.

During the autumn of the championship season 1932/33 he ended his engagement in Prague and moved on to France, where professional football had just been introduced. Czernicky signed with the north of France SC Fives , where initially with a seventh place in the group, the relegation was just managed. In the following season, the team around Ernest Libérati , André Cheuva and Czernicky's old Slavia colleague Václav Bára could achieve the runner-up title, just one point behind FC Sète . This success could not be repeated, however, in the next few years it was only enough for midfield places, in the Cup , however, you could reach the semi-finals twice. In 1938 Czernicky, who had meanwhile also taken over the coaching position with the Fivois, ended his professional career.

National team

In April 1927 Czernicky played in a game between the B national team and Hungary, and a few weeks later he made his debut in the A team when he formed the runner-up with Otto Kaller and Leopold Hofmann in Zurich in a 4-1 win against Switzerland . Since he then went abroad, his team career was already over. During his time with Slavia he played in the Prague city selection, while his activity in Lille he was appointed to the northern French regional selection.

Coaching career

Czernicky took over in 1948 the coaching office at his home club Slovan and in 1949 achieved promotion to the top division. However, after just one year of being in the top class, the club had to relegate and in January 1951 the coach received the offer to look after the first division team SK Sturm Graz . He replaced Ludwig Durek , who, in addition to his work as a player, had also been a coach, and led the Grazers, who were in danger of relegation, to a safe midfield position. After another season he was replaced by Karl Decker . Later he also worked as a trainer in Norway.
