Franz Grasser

Franz Grasser (born March 26, 1911 in Wörishofen , † November 13, 1944 in Novorossijsk ) was a German photographer .

Life

Grasser was born in Bad Wörishofen and attended a private high school there . He learned the photography trade from his uncle Othmar Rutz (1879–1961), who ran a photo and souvenir shop in St. Moritz, Switzerland . From 1936 Grasser worked as an on- board photographer , a sub-genre of travel photography , for the Hamburg company Carl Müller & Son . His first trips took him to the north with the Monte Olivia . Shortly thereafter, he was used by the Hamburg South American Steamship Company (HSDG) in the South American service. In 1937/38 he was ordered on a world tour liner that crossed the oceans for Hapag from 1936 to 1938 .

With the beginning of the Second World War , German passenger shipping came to a standstill and with it Grasser's activity as an on-board photographer. In the spring of 1942, Grasser was drafted and initially stationed in Holland . He came to Ukraine around 1943, and on November 13, 1944, Grasser died as a prisoner of war in Novorossiysk on the Black Sea .

In 2009, Grasser's photographic estate came from private ownership to the Deutsche Fotothek department of the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library (SLUB). In addition to numerous black-and-white negatives, it also includes a large pool of Agfacolor slides with individually undated photographs of voyages from 1936 to 1939.
