He belongs to the great sculptor family Hauser from Breisgau . The paternal grandfather Georg († around 1653 in Kirchzarten) and the father Johann Georg (* 1611, † 1660/61, both in Kirchzarten) were sculptors. After his father's death, his mother married the sculptor Johann Conrad Winterhalder (* 1640 in Neukirch near Furtwangen in the Black Forest , † 1676 in Kirchzarten). Franz did an apprenticeship with his stepfather Winterhalder. The following years of traveling took him to Schlettstadt in Alsace, where he married in 1672. When his father-in-law died in 1676 at the latest, he moved back to Breisgau and lived in Freiburg. His relations in Alsace remained close, however, and in 1703 he is attested again in Schlettstadt. His wife died there in 1707, with whom he had 9 children. He married again and had four more children with his second wife, one of whom was a son, François Antoine (that is Franz Xaver Anton Hauser (1712–1772)), who succeeded him in the profession of sculptor.

Most of the extensive work in Breisgau and Alsace has been lost, such as an altar of Mary in the Freiburg Minster and a high altar in the church of St. Georg in Schlettstadt. The most important surviving work are the figures of the high altar of the Catholic parish church St. Gallus in Kirchzarten , calm, upright, looking a bit rigid. He also made the Madonna and Child on the right side altar in the same church. The figures “reveal a solid, capable carver of middle rank who was denied great achievements and who could in no way compete with the important masters of Upper Swabia, Bavaria or the Lake Constance area. This may also be due to the fact that Franz Hauser settled down in Schlettstadt at the age of 21 after a very short wandering. This was simply not enough for a comprehensive artistic training with important teachers. Franz Hauser is an interesting figure among the well-known carvers at the end of the 17th century on the Upper Rhine. "
