Franz Heger (born January 5, 1792 in Worms , † May 2, 1836 in Darmstadt ) was a German architect , Hessian construction clerk and engraver .

Life

Franz Heger was born in Worms in 1792. At the age of twelve he came to Darmstadt with his parents and attended grammar school. 1809/1810 he studied camera science and mathematics at the Ludwigs-Universität Gießen . He was then hired as a candidate for the Grand Ducal Building Administration. In 1810, Heger devoted himself to architecture in the studios of Georg Moller in Darmstadt and Friedrich Weinbrenner in Karlsruhe. In 1812 he was appointed building conductor and in 1815 assessor .

As Weinbrenner's companion, he traveled to northern Germany and began study trips to southern Germany, Italy, Greece and France in 1817, from which he did not return to Darmstadt until 1821, where he re-entered the Hessian civil service and from 1834 worked in the rank of senior building councilor.

In 1822 he was appointed master builder for the city of Darmstadt and the district council. He was responsible for the entire civil building industry in the surrounding area and the military building industry in the royal seat. At the top of the numerous buildings designed and executed by him is the Dragoon Barracks, built between 1825 and 1827 on Marienplatz in Darmstadt, which, despite its simplicity, shows a successful arrangement as well as stylish treatment. It was almost completely destroyed in World War II.

From 1825 to 1827 he also built the infantry barracks along Alexanderstrasse. The remaining parts were finally integrated into the city center campus of the Technical University of Darmstadt after the Second World War .

The Rundeturmstrasse prison, which was built in 1832/1833 and only had to give way to a parking lot in 1969, also came from Heger.

Heger also taught architecture and mathematics at the secondary school.

Heger did not live to see the publication of the restoration of the Parthenon , which he had almost completed ; he died on May 2, 1836.
